Part of the Bolton Abbey estate, the Valley of Desolation was named after the great storm of 1836 when harsh storms devastated the area.. Posforth Gill collects the rainfall from a huge area of Barden Moor and deposits it into the mighty River Wharfe . The Gill contains many waterfalls but this painting is inspired by one of it's most dramatic.
